Beyond Bézier – Explorations of drawing methods in type design

In the age of early digital type, several methods were explored to draw letterforms. One of them, the Bézier spline, an algorithm that generates curves with a small quantity of data, has the crucial advantage of sparing computer memory. As a result, drawing with Bézier curves became the industry standard.

Beyond Bézier is a research project that aims to question and reevaluate this standard, to move beyond established trends, and to develop innovative, liberating ideas by exploring alternative methods of drawing letterforms.

Cancellation of the Brno Biennial means loss of a sixty years’ worth of cultural heritage, international platform allowing ideas to circulate, physical place for authors to meet. A Gothic comes in two weights with italics and complementary AA Gothic. Reversing the idea of ink traps (originally devised for small type sizes allowing ink to spread into removed areas) the AA styles are intended for titles, headings or inscriptions. Like dents du bonheur they give typeface distinctive detail and personality.
Kin was designed in London between 19 April 2017 and 7 January 2020 with pronounced diacritics welded into its letter shapes.

Lÿno was designed by Karl Nawrot and Radim Peško between 2009 and 2012.
